Litho 6 colour.
Lithographic (litho) printing is based on the principle that water and oil do not mix, it is a superior printing method compared to the Flexographic printing process. Our printers have 4, 6 or 8 colour printing presses and some are able to print up to 300dpi. A metal plate is treated so that the image area attracts oil-based inks and the wet non image areas repel the oil-based inks. We use a particular type of litho printing called ‘offset’printing. This refers to the ink being transferred onto the paper using a rubber cylinder (blanket) first before finally transferring onto the paper. This ensures that the plate does not come into direct contact with the paper preserving the quality of the plate. These printers are sheet-fed; hence we cannot use these printing presses on anything other than paper and card which can then converted into various types of packaging.
Digital full colour.
A generic term that covers methods of printing from a digital base image directly on to a variety of different media. It usually has a higher cost per print than more traditional printing methods such as offset litho and flexo, but this price is usually offset by the cost saving in not requiring printing plates. It also saves labour on the image formatting as you can usually print from other digital sources such as jpeg’s and gif’s without pre-processing. All these factors reduce the typical setup time for printing making it economical at low runs. One of the problems with digital printing is that the print quality is not as good as other printing methods.
