Printing Methods
Screen printing 2 colours (dark ribbon with lighter inks). Screen printing is a printing technique that uses a woven mesh to support an ink-blocking stencil. The attached stencil forms open areas of mesh that transfer ink or other printable materials which can be pressed through the mesh as a sharp-edged image onto a substrate. A squeegee is moved across the screen stencil, forcing ink into the mesh openings for transfer by capillary action during the squeegee stroke. Basically, it is the process of using a stencil to apply ink onto another material. We are unable to print tone and fine detail using this print method. Multi-colour prints are possible however tight registration is difficult to maintain. CMYK printing is possible however it is better to use a transfer. The stencils are disposed of after use to comply with ISO requirements.Rotary ribbon printer 6 colours (light ribbon with darker inks only).Similar to rotogravure, a metal cylinder transfers the print onto the ribbon, however more like flexo printing as it used a positive raised surface on the cylinder to take ink from the ink tray and print it onto the ribbon. It is not possible to flood print ribbon using this type of printer therefore this printing process is only useful to print dark colours onto lighter ribbon, usually only white and cream.
Foil printing 1 colour. Hot foil blocking is a traditional process and is basically metal foil which is used to create shiny metal foil effects on products. The process of foil blocking is conducted by a block being made from your design and then the metallic or coloured foil is then impressed onto the paper or board, this is always done after the litho printing element of the job but always before the finishing.
